Home Based Day Care Centres

The Home Based day Care Centre project was initiated in collaboration with the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN), and through the Community Organization Training (COT) Programme. The Centres are housed in the homes of the mothers who have been selected by the community members. There are approximately 40 Centre spread in all the eight villages of Korogocho.

Korogocho Creative Arts Training

The organization is recruiting youth volunteers to form a performing arts team which include acting, dancing, acrobats and soccer teams respectively. Members come from each of the 8 villages that form the slum. These teams are undergoing an intensive training in drama, dance, and soccer and are engage in live performances and sports activities targeting both the local and large community.

Interactive Counseling and Peer Education Workshops

Many of the youth in the slums in Korogocho are addicted to drugs and others have gone through very traumatic life experiences, therefore they are in dire need of mental and emotional health rehabilitation. Providing group and individual counseling to the youth will help heal emotional and mental wounds as the youth open up to each other and share their life experiences with each other which will also encourage....

Entrepreneurship Training

The team has been undergoing training in entrepreneurial skills, computer skills, project management and business skills; this enables the youth to take part in running CYEN-Korogocho, in addition to teaching those skills that increase their employability. These services are provided in partnership with private companies as well as volunteers from the members of the Kenyan community.

The organization will ensure that its members who are orphans are given identity cards and birth certificates to ensure that they can vote and can be recognized as legitimate Kenyan citizens. Politicians in Kenya are notorious for take advantage of the frustration of the youth in the Kenyan slums.

Consequently, the teams will create information network to address slum community concerns like drug abuse, crime, AIDS etc in their shows which will be staged in the slums. The project will create networks in the slums; each of the trainees will represent the organization and what it stands for in the community.

Home Based Day Care Centres

The villages include; Gitathuru, Ngomongo, Grogon, Nyayo, Kisumu Ndogo, Highridge, Korogocho “A” and Korogocho “B”. Each centre has a capacity of 10 children. The program therefore care for a total of four hundred children aged between 0-6 years old as well as creating income generating activities for the women (caregivers) who are left with the children. The overall purpose of the project is to provide an affordable and accessible early childhood care and education for the children from low-income earners.                      more>>

The trainingl demands a lot of discipline and commitment by volunteers thereby keeping them from the hardcore streets and reintegrating them into society. The training ensure that the youth volunteers gain leadership skills, confidence and self esteem as well as develop team work as it involves team building activities. These youth become change agents in the slum and helps drive community safety through influencing and educating their peers and neighborhoods in the fight against crime. Providing group and individual counseling to the youth will help heal emotional and mental wounds as the youth open up to each other and share their life experiences with each other which will also encourage reconciliation and reintegration especially after the recent post election violence. This counseling is incorporated in the training program and is mandatory to the members. It has also been noted that participation in the recreation activities the youth will need to undergo some counseling so that they can completely disengage themselves from the street activities. Peer to peer intervention is very effective way of communicating and sharing knowledge among people of the same social class.                                                                                 more>>

Entrepreneurship Training

The team has been undergoing training in entrepreneurial skills, computer skills, project management and business skills; this enables the youth to take part in running CYEN-Korogocho, in addition to teaching those skills that increase their employability. These services are provided in partnership with private companies as well as volunteers from the members of the Kenyan community. Every month or two the teams stage a show outside and within their community for a small fee. In addition the teams are challenged and given material help to come up with other fundraising activities. The organization will in turn assist the performing arts teams as well as soccer teams with income generating activities such as gaining entry into national and local performing arts competitions and as well as marketing their services to the communities. At the end of the training, teams from the group are required to come up with an entrepreneurial activity which will incorporate all that have learnt in the entrepreneurship training and submit it to the organization. The organization supports the start up viable activities and gets entrepreneurship experts to come and advise on how to improve others.                                                          more>>

The post election violence witnessed after the 2007 elections is a good example of the youth being incited to murder and maim their flow poor slum dwellers and countrymen. In addition the teams will encourage voter registration as well as promote forums to hold their local Members of Parliament (MP) accountable so that they have a say in policies and decisions that affect their livelihoods.                                                                                                                             more>>

The situation of the girl child in formal education needs to be enhanced further. The CYEN’s strategy will be to link to all the possibilities of incorporating community guidance and counseling to keep the girl child in school while helping girls to focus on achieving education goals. A successful model called Education for Life Process (EDULIVE-P) will be devised and used after the study.

The Home Based Care and Education Model, on the other hand, focused on children in need of special protection in Korogocho urban slum. Over 3,000 children have enrolled /and benefited in Centres that provided care, education and protection against abuse and eglect.                 more>>
